We’re one week out from the due date so I’m taking you on a little tour of the nursery today.
For the last few years I’ve been working away at this Storytime Sampler. It wasn’t meant to be for a nursery, but when we found out a baby was on the way I knew it would be perfect for a nursery theme. We’re an eclectic nerdy couple so I couldn’t imagine limiting the nursery theme to a single story.
I decided to include all of our favorites… Star Wars, Doctor Who, Harry Potter, Peter Pan and then weave everything together with some woodland touches. We finished up the nursery this week so I thought I’d share. Indoor photography is not my forte, but I did my best!
Let’s have a little tour, shall we?
I wanted books themselves to play a big part in the decor so we bought two of these FLISAT shelves from IKEA. Board books can be quite expensive so I’ve been hunting them down in used bookstores for months. Most of these are used, but you’d never know to look at them! We also registered for some of our favorites and ended up with quite a beautiful collection. I’ll be rotating out the books that we keep here within easy reach.
This “Wendy Window” was from my college apartment with some new greenery I picked up at Target. Mom knitted the owl from a this pattern by @dotpebbles_knits.
Of all our nursery projects the biggest was recovering this heirloom gooseneck rocker. It’s been in my mama’s family for years and we know it was last recovered in the 1950s. Click here for the before & after. I chose William Morris’ Strawberry Thief fabric from Spoonflower and the sweet bunny is by Jellycat (affiliate link.) After a lot of searching I found the macrame foot pouf at Tuesday Morning for quite a good price and the gray braided rug at Target.
We’re planning to keep the baby in a side sleeper for several months and then we’ll be trying a Montessori style floor bed. This is a modified version of the KURA bunk bed from IKEA. Nathan added the roof peak and we did a couple other modifications inspired by Pinterest.
The tree branch curtain rod is by Urbanest and sprayed with a champagne colored paint from Joann Fabrics. The flower curtains were tricky to photograph, but cast the most lovely tree dappled shadows on a sunny day. I found them on sale at Target. Behind the airy curtains are blackout roller blinds to make the room dark at bedtime or naptime.
To give the bed a Wendy House vibe I twined more vines (these are battery powered twinkle lights) from Target and added a high contrast bird mobile from Amazon (affiliate link.) Mom sewed the baby nest from Simplicity 8568 and we found the Jellycat teddy at the Walton Five & Dime. After months of searching for a low stool we finally found this one at Burlington Coat Factory when I’d stopped looking.
This wall art was a key part of choosing the theme and color palette. Aren’t these designs by Sarah Brown just lovely? Follow her Instagram here. I had some difficulty narrowing it down to three prints, but I finally decided on Peter Pan, Star Wars, and Harry Potter. I have her Hobbit Hole in my office.
I needed large prints that didn’t break the bank so I ordered these from Canvas Champ and was quite happy with the quality! (Can you believe these were only $17 each?)
Here’s a peek at the cross stitch that I based the nursery design on. I started with this pattern by Frosted Pumpkin Stitchery and ended up designing 6 out of 12 vignettes to include all of my childhood favorites. To the right is a little white house I picked up from Target Dollar Spot with some of our LEGO minifigs and a tiny toys.
I tried to keep the overall design simple and bright and most of the decor I’m happy to use elsewhere in the house when he gets old enough to choose his own decorations.
The paint color and wide angle shots were particularly hard to photograph so I’m really hoping to film a video this week if I have the chance. Let me know if that’s something you’d like to see.
